Hokianga Harbor view with sand dunes
Description
A view down the Hokianga Harbour towards the sand hills presents a striking landscape dominated by active sand dunes rising up to 200 meters at the northern mouth of the harbour. These quaternary sand dunes spill dramatically into the more sheltered harbour, creating a bold contrast between the dynamic, open sand and the vegetated harbour edges. The dunes show patterns of natural forces like wind and water currents shaping the landscape, with pockets of manuka and spinifex vegetation. The harbour itself extends inland as a long drowned river valley, surrounded by rugged bush-clad hills, many reverting to native forest. The scene evokes a sense of raw natural power combined with a peaceful estuarine environment, characteristic of the unique Hokianga coastal and ecological district in New Zealand.
